TECH-LADEN ACTROS SET FOR MIAA INTRODUCTION
ercedes-Benz cruise control with stop-and-go The fuel consumption of the has unveiled the function and the lane-keeping new Actros has once again been latest version of its assistant from Mercedes- reduced compared to previous agship truck – the Benz. While responsibility models and it achieves savings of
 Actros. Featuring a whole host
of advanced technologies to help improve safety, ef ciency and fuel economy, the new tractor unit will be of cially introduced to the world at the IAA Commercial Vehicle Show in Hannover later this month.
Arguably the most important and impressive innovation is Active Drive Assist, which enables Mercedes-Benz Trucks to put partially automated driving into series production. The new Active Drive Assist can brake, accelerate and steer independently and, unlike systems that only work
at certain speeds, Active Drive Assist offers the driver partially automated driving in all speed ranges. New elements are the active latitudinal control and the combination of longitudinal and lateral control in all speed ranges through the fusion of radar and camera information.
Active Drive Assist builds upon the tried-and-tested adaptive
for monitoring the traf c situation remains with the driver, the system provides signi cant support and makes an important contribution to increased road safety.
One of the most noticeable changes from the outgoing model is the lack of door mirrors. The main mirrors and
wide-angle mirrors
have been replaced
on the new Actros
by the MirrorCam as
part of the standard
equipment. The
MirrorCam enables improvements in
aerodynamics, safety
and vehicle handling.
This system provides
a improved all-round
view and consists of

to the exterior of the

on rural routes. Aerodynamic improvements have been achieved thanks to MirrorCam and new cab side de ectors.

  HOW TO DEAL WITH PRESSURE
Predominantly a Scania eet, Hamilton Waste rst used Continental products when they came as original tment on new trucks. Based on that early experience, they asked Scania to continue to t only Continental Construction tyres to all their new trucks. Today, the Hamilton Waste eet runs new Continental HSC1 tyres on steer axles, and HDC1 on drive axles. ■
Hamilton Waste & Recycling
Ltd has replaced its former tyre pressure monitoring system with ContiPressureCheck from Continental Tyres. “One of the major costs for our business, both in time and money, had been tyre failures — speci cally, punctures,” says Keir Hamilton, director of the family-owned business. “The rst system we
had simply did not provide enough accuracy to help us spot and save affected tyres, so we researched alternatives and found ContiPressureCheck. We had been specifying Continental Construction tyres for some time and, as a premium product, it was important to
us to pick up even slight initial pressure losses and possible
puncture threats.”
The operator runs some 18
skip-loaders, seven roll-on/ roll-offs, two trade waste
RCVs and four arctic units
on its operations across Musselburgh. These primarily cover construction and demolition waste, but also a growing volume of trade waste and general public skip hire.
FORD IN IT FOR THE LONG-HAUL
Ahead of an unveiling at the
IAA Commercial Vehicle Show
in Hannover, Ford has released limited details about its new long- haul truck. The at- oor tractor unit promises – according to the
Blue Oval – to be every bit as competitive as its European rivals. In development since 2003, the new truck will feature a 2.5m-wide cab and will be built in Turkey.
Director of international trucks
Emrah Duman has been quoted as saying: “There will no longer be seven sisters, there will be eight. And we have ambitions to enter all the markets that they are present in.”
However, don’t get too excited because, while Ford is in the process of establishing a service network across Western Europe, there are no immediate plans to sell trucks in the UK. ■
